These are the stats from UIC Incoming Group at Yahoo Groups as of right now (time of post). I took over as moderater and IGSA webmaster in April 2005. I guess the stats speak the rest for themselves 😉
I took this job to help out ppl just the way I was helped before. I guess I am doing it….. nice n gud….
Didnt like the movie. One has to be a fan of Sin City Illustrated Novels so as to like this movie. I found the movie utterly gross and dark.
The only kewl part about the movie is that it was all animated other than the characters.
I give it 3/10.
Went to Indiana for the USGP, i.e. the United States Grand Prix. Left me with mixed emotions. On one hand I was elated to see a F1 race for the first time in my life, while on the other hand I was very disappointed to see only 3 teams race. Schumi was a winner right from the beginning. It was just nice to see the kinda of atmosphere created with just 6 cars on track and to imagine how it would have been, had there been 20 cars !
The crowd was amazing. It was a really good atmosphere. Even though it thined down after the start of the race, it was still fun. Everyone was disgusted with the way things had turned out but were still trying to enjoy in all that had been offered.
Other than this another highlight was me getting to drive a total of 370+ miles in about 7 hrs from Chicago to Indianapolis and back…. averaging at 50 miles/hr. Though it made me tired, I loved every bit of it.

I had thought that I would be able to successfully solve the no sound problem in my Fedora 4 somehow, but it wasnt to be before a lot of trying. I thought it was a drivers problem and tried to install ALSA drivers and still nothing happened. I tried to work around with other things but to no avail.
Eventually, I burned a mini network install CD of SuSE 9.2 and installed that. This made things worse. The sound card was being detected as usual, but the sound wasnt there. Along with that the touchpad also stopped responding properly and the USB mouse couldnt scroll. I dumped it all again and installed Fedora 4 again. This time, I just tried to tweak things here and there, but after some time I again could come up with anything. What amazed me most was the fact that no such problem had been mentioned anywhere on the net and nothing good came up on google. Karthik, a fellow Graduate Assitant at ITL, helped me and he also couldnt come up with much until we hit the jackpot.
The problem is that Linux has a line sensor feature that wasnt working properly. We connected a set of headphones and found that it was working fine. And once we disconnected them, the PC speakers also responded. Since then they have been working perfectly.
So moral of the story is that, If your sound card is being detected and you are not able to hear any sound (after checking that nothing is set to mute), just connect a pair of headphones to the laptop and then remove them. It will solve the problem for good.
I am now using Fedora 4 happily.
Amazing….. just amazing….. really nice movie for everyone to watch. Some guys might not like it as it’s a romantic and a sentimental movie, but it’s a nice watch if you have a taste for such movies. Someone passed it off to me as “Devdas with a happy ending“. I in some aspects do agree with that outlook, but still this movie is so much better than that. It’s got a good storyline which progresses at a good constant rate. You never get bored during the movie.
The acting is really good by all the actors. Watching Rekha do an item number was kewl… she looked so elegant… debutant director sarkar has done a great job. The music of the movie is also very good.
This movie is a must watch for all… I give it a 7/10.

I am a total believer in the above stmt. I have found that I cant seem to stay put with one OS. I reacently got an external harddrive, 120GB Western Digital, and that meant that I had a lot more space on my 60gig laptop drive.
So I decided to reinstall a linux distro. Well…. I had had experience with SuSE 9.2 Pro, RedHat and Fedora Core 3. So, conforming to the above stmt, I decided to try some new distro. Thats when all hell broke loose.
I started by trying to get Ubuntu 5.04 to work. I really like what they have done with the theme. But I didnt like their installation process. Nothing can match the installation process of Fedora or Gentoo; Fedora makes it so darn simple while giving you so many options, where as Gentoo makes is so darn difficult, but gives you total control on how you want the system to be.
Next I went ahead and downloaded Gentoo Linux. It was fun to begin with…. was very inspiring (dont know why) and I really liked it, till the time I reached “dependency issues”. I got so frustrated, that I just dropped the whole idea and went back to Ubuntu. After a few days, I was talking to this friend of mine who had Gentoo on his laptop and it just made me give it a go again. I started the installation again and all went well. I even installed the GRUB and restarted the machine. Just so happens that I screwed up grub.conf and then system wont boot into the gentoo linux which i had very cutely renamed as Nalin’s Linux. Have decided to wait for the Gentoo XLIVE CDs to come out before I give it a go again.
The ordeal wasnt over yet. I started checking out other distros online. Came up with Debian 3.1 Sarge. Thought about it, seemed good. So downloaded and installed it. I hated the console mode install. And once I started the system, I hated the interface too…. U might be calling me dumb, as all the interfaces of linux are same(other than SuSE which is distinctivly different)…. but, I didnt get a good feel.
So I again went on search and finally decided upon Fedora Core 4. I love it. It’s almost the same as Fedora 3, but the interface is better supported as there are better drivers for my Nvidia Graphics Card. The sound card is giving me problems but I will soon fix that too. Also, the wireless is woring on my lappy. Ndiswrapper is a great tool.
Will update later on my quest with Linux.
Went for the Chicago Blues Festival. Was a kewl expirenece as by the time we reached there, there was a large gathering of Jazz enthusiasts and the weather had turned great. Just sat there with friends and listened to music. Really puts one at ease.
I dont know why ? I keep asking this me at times and yesterday I was confronted with this question again. Why is there a need for me to make myself available to the public. Or is it that ?
I started blogging just for the simple reason to make my presense felt in the vast ocean that we call the web. I have a small website too but that is there mainly to show my portfolio and my resume. But why blog ? and the more confusing part is, why blog when u know that probablly no one will read your blog for a long long time to come and it doesnt matter what I say or do using a blog at this point of time. It’s like a prof. teaching an empty class….
Am I just wasting my time ? I dont know but for now, I intended to carry on. Lets see what happens in the future.
At Last…. after days of gruelling concentration and hours of intense concentration, I have finally finished reading Fountain Head. I had to find time every now and then to read that novel. It started out as ‘a novel that every one has read so I should read it too‘ kind of a novel and got pretty interesting. Well, at a point of time I actually started to hate the novel. All the novels that i have read till now have had more of storyline and less of character description, where as this novel just turned the whole concept around for me. At the end, I didnt drop it for a straight 6 hours and finished it. Am so freaking drowsy now because I havent slept the whole night because of that novel.
I must say that i loved the novel. It’s a master peice. The way the author has talked about the characters is just amazing. Reading the novel just makes you think so much about yourself and the people around you.
Anyways, now that it’s over, i can live in peace…..
